Is this for you?

Bundi is a small town with a hill fort, a palace full of old wall paintings, and stepwells, deep stone wells with steps down to the water. You'll find few crowds and almost no nightlife. It suits couples, and anyone solo, who like to wander slowly. If you want a big night out, skip it.

What to do

Garh Palace and Chitrashala

Garh Palace is open 08:00 to 17:00 and has old wall paintings, with Chitrashala as the painted gallery. Sukh Mahal, a palace beside Jait Sagar lake, houses the state museum.

Taragarh fort

A hill fort above the town. Rajasthan Tourism dates it to 1354.

Stepwells

A baori or kund is a stepwell, a deep stone well with steps down to the water. Raniji ki Baori is the best known, and Dabhai Kund is another.

Lakes and cenotaphs

Jait Sagar, Nawal Sagar and the Nagar Sagar pair are the town's lakes. Kshar Bagh holds royal cenotaphs, memorial pavilions, and the Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri is a pavilion with 84 pillars.

What to eat

Bundi eats simply, on guesthouse rooftops and in small cafes around the old town. Come for the painted palace and treat a good thali, a round plate of small dishes, as a bonus.

Bafla thali

Bafla are dough balls, boiled then baked, eaten with dal. Ask around.

Vegetarian

Laal maas

A red, chilli-heavy mutton curry from Rajasthan. Look for it at dinner in a hotel kitchen.

Rajasthani thali

A round plate of small dishes with bread, dal and vegetables. Cafes in the old town serve it, and the main market can be cheaper.

Getting there

Jaipur is the nearest airport, 192 to 215 km away and about 3 hours by road. Kota, a larger railway town, is about 36 km away. Trains run from Bundi to Kota, Sawai Madhopur (about 2.5 hours) and Udaipur (about 5.5 hours), but those times come from one guide, so check when you book. Bundi station is about 4 km south of the old city.

Where to stay

Old town near Garh Palace Heritage havelis, old family mansions turned guesthouses, near the palace, with a few stays out by Jait Sagar. There's little luxury here.
