Tibetan culture, monasteries and hiking sit side by side here. It's a good fit if you're solo, a couple or friends who like slow days and cafes. Many Tibetan sites are on a legal restricted list, so keep visits to daytime and carry your passport. If slow days bore you, skip it.

Fly to Kangra airport, about 12 to 15 km away. Or take a train to Pathankot, about 85 to 90 km, then a bus or taxi. Manali is about 235 km, so plan a full day, and the road from Kasol is a long day too. The Kangra Valley narrow-gauge train isn't part of our plan.

Visit Tibetan sites by day with your passport: the 2025 immigration order lists many as Restricted Areas, including Namgyal, Kirti and Dip Tse Chokling monasteries, the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, Men-Tsee-Khang, Tushita and Dhamma Sikhara, and day visits need no permit only if the site reports your details to the foreigners registration office. Overnight stays and retreats may need a permit, so check with the site or that office before booking.
Plan for March to May or October to November. Heavy rain in July and August makes sightseeing and hiking difficult.
Check dalailama.com before you plan around the Dalai Lama. His schedule lists only a Long Life Offering on 24 February 2027 and no public teaching from November 2026, and dates can change.
