Gangtok is the tidy capital of Sikkim, a small Himalayan state of monasteries, prayer flags and big mountain day trips. The catch is paperwork: you apply online for a Sikkim permit before you travel, and there's no permit at the border. It suits couples and small groups who plan ahead. If you're solo you can enjoy the town, but trips to high areas may need a group. If you hate planning ahead, skip it.
Go in the coloured months. The black ones are best avoided.

A high mountain lake roughly 40 km from Gangtok. You need a separate online permit for one day only, so no overnight stop, and likely a group of two or more via a registered Sikkim agent. See the permit notice first.
Sikkim's food is Nepali, Tibetan and Sikkimese at once, and fermented greens matter as much as meat. The best local cooking is often at homestays, so say yes if a host suggests a meal.

Pakyong airport has had no scheduled flights since June 2024, so fly to Bagdogra or take the Howrah to NJP Vande Bharat, then NH10: about 114 km from Siliguri, 124 km from NJP. We've no firm time, so allow most of a day, in daylight. Sevoke to Rangpo shuts at night until 5 November 2026, and landslides can close it for days, so keep a spare day.
Around MG Marg The central, walkable area, with budget, mid-range and some five-star hotels. That's from one source, so check before you book.

Apply on e-FRRO (indianfrro.gov.in) at least 30 days ahead, the embassy's deadline; other reports disagree, so use the earlier one. No border permits since January 2026, and an e-Visa alone isn't enough. High-altitude trips need a registered Sikkim operator, and plan on two or more people. Bhutanese citizens are exempt, Overseas Citizens of India count as foreigners, and we couldn't confirm the fee.

Leave a spare day before any onward flight or train. One source says NH10 to Gangtok is prone to landslides: a 2025 closure lasted six days, and Sevoke saw diversions on 27 June 2026.

Clear the 52 km Sevoke to Rangpo stretch by 21:00: shut 21:00 to 06:00, 26 October to 5 November 2026. Rangpo to Ranipool shuts 21:00 to 05:00, 29 October to 4 November; check for later closures.
Plan only on Tsomgo (Changu) Lake, Yumthang Valley and Zero Point, each with its own online permit: sources conflict, so we show the narrower list. Tsomgo's covers one day, Nathu La is Indians only, and guides say Gurudongmar Lake and Zuluk are shut to foreigners.

Citizens of Afghanistan, China or Pakistan, or with a parent or grandparent from there, need Home Ministry approval first. Sources differ: Sikkim's page adds Nigerians, so ask an embassy early.

Fly to Bagdogra in West Bengal and continue by road. Sikkim's Pakyong airport has had no scheduled flights since June 2024, and no airline had asked to restart.
