Is this for you?

Guwahati is your door into the Northeast, a busy Brahmaputra city with an airport and a major railway station. Most people only pass through, and one night is enough. Its one strong sight is Kamakhya, a large Hindu temple to a goddess on a hill above the city. If you want a place to linger, skip it and move on.

What to do

Kamakhya temple

A large Hindu temple to a goddess on Nilachal Hill, about 25 to 30 minutes' drive from the centre. Go in the morning. We couldn't confirm hours or where non-Hindus may enter, so ask at the gate.

Sources differ on this, or we have only one, so check locally.

Uzan Bazar and the river

An old quarter a short walk from the Brahmaputra river. It's an easy place to spend a free afternoon before you leave.

Onward by road

Most people leave the next morning. Shillong is about 2 to 3.5 hours away by road, and Kaziranga National Park about 200 km, 4 to 5 hours.

What to eat

Guwahati is your best chance to try Assamese food properly, sour and alkaline where most Indian food is rich. Stay the one night and spend it on a thali, a set plate.

Aloo pitika

Potato mashed with mustard oil and chilli. A plain, satisfying side on nearly every Assamese plate.

Vegetarian

Assamese thali

A set plate of rice with small dishes, sour, smoky and bitter. The easiest way to try it all at one sitting.

Khar

A dish made with an alkaline liquid from burnt banana peel, sometimes with fish. Usually the first bite of an Assamese meal.

Masor tenga

A light, tangy fish curry, the taste most people link with Assam. Have it with rice at lunch.

Where to go

KhorikaaGS Road, Ulubari

Named for khorika, Assamese barbecue skewers. Comfortable, with a good veg thali too.

Mid-range
MaihangHengrabari Road

Traditional Assamese food with quick service. One to try if you're staying near Dispur.

Mid-range
ParadiseChandmari

Assamese thalis since 1984. Go for the thali and the khar.

Mid-range

Getting there

Fly direct from Delhi (about 2 hours 15 to 25 minutes), Kolkata (about 1 hour 20 to 35 minutes) or Mumbai (about 3 hours). Howrah, Kolkata's main station, is about 17 hours overnight by train. The Delhi Rajdhani train takes about 27 hours, too long for most trips. From here Shillong is 2 to 3.5 hours by road, Kaziranga 4 to 5.

Where to stay

GS Road and Dispur Mid-range to upper hotels in the business part of the city. Go here for a comfortable stopover.

Paltan Bazaar Bazaar means market, and this one's closest to the railway station, so early trains are easy. Many budget hotels in Guwahati don't take foreigners, so confirm before you book.

Uzan Bazar An old quarter near the river with at least one heritage guesthouse. Good for a quiet night before Kaziranga.

Worth knowing

Safety

Governments advise extra care in parts of Northeast India. The UK government warns of sudden flare-ups on state borders, including Assam and Meghalaya, and says protests and road blockades are common and can close highways. Australia's advice, updated 29 October 2026, says to reconsider travel to parts of Assam including Tinsukia, Charaideo and Sivasagar, and that travel insurance may not cover those areas. The US lists the Northeastern States at Level 3, reconsider travel. Guwahati, Kaziranga and Majuli appear to sit outside the named Australian districts, but check the live advice before you book, and make sure your insurance covers the places you plan to visit.

Rules

Before you book, ask the hotel in writing whether it accepts foreigners. Many budget hotels here don't, and only a few near the railway station are licensed to.

Opening

Avoid late June at Kamakhya, or check first. The inner sanctum shuts for the Ambubachi festival: night of 22 June to 26 June in 2026, with crowds of hundreds of thousands, and we've no 2027 dates.
