Is this for you?

Come here for the Muslim dynasties of the Deccan, the plateau of southern India: the Qutb Shahi kings of Golconda, then the Nizams. It's an easy city to reach, and you can see the best of it in two days. The Old City is conservative and chaotic, so dress modestly and leave before it gets late. Skip it if you've already got Delhi and Agra on your route and only have time for one more Islamic-heritage stop near them.

What to do

Charminar

Built in 1591, with four minarets about 48.7 m tall, it anchors the Old City. Guides disagree on hours, the foreigner fee (often ₹300) and a Friday closure, so check before you go.

Sources differ on this, or we have only one, so check locally.

Mecca Masjid courtyard

A short walk from Charminar, and entry is free. Sources disagree on whether non-Muslims and women may enter the prayer hall, so plan on the courtyard and follow what staff tell you.

Chowmahalla Palace

The palace of the Nizams, Hyderabad's later rulers, on foot from Charminar. Open 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, closed Fridays. Foreigners pay ₹500 with a passport, plus ₹50 for phone photos.

Salar Jung Museum

The big Old City museum, on the south bank of the Musi River. Open 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, last entry 5:15 pm, closed Fridays. Foreigners pay ₹1,000, plus ₹50 for a camera or phone.

Golconda Fort

About 10 km west of the Old City, this fort is tied to the old diamond trade. Foreigner fees are quoted at ₹200 to ₹300 and hours vary, so confirm at the gate. A light and sound show has its own ticket.

Qutb Shahi Tombs

The tombs of the kings of Golconda, now a restored heritage park. The Aga Khan Trust for Culture was due to take over running it from August 2026, so check hours and fees first.

Laad Bazaar

The market across from Charminar, for bangles, henna and clothes. It's chaotic, so walk it quickly and keep your valuables close.

What to eat

Plan your days around lunch here. Hyderabad's food comes from the Nizams' kitchens and the old Irani cafes, and the best of it is meat, slow-cooked, though vegetarians still eat well. Come in Ramzan, the Muslim fasting month, if you can, because that's when the haleem appears.

Baghare baingan

Small aubergines stuffed with gram flour, peanuts, coconut and tamarind. The best vegetarian answer to all that mutton, and good with plain rice.

Vegetarian

Haleem

A thick, slow-cooked stew of meat, broken wheat and lentils, topped with fried onions. It's a Ramzan dish, so eat it after sunset that month.

Hyderabadi biryani

Rice and spiced mutton sealed and steamed together. Have it for lunch in the Old City, and order the sour chutney on the side if it's offered.

Irani chai with Osmania biscuits

Strong milky tea, from the cafes Iranian migrants opened, with a sweet-salty butter biscuit to dunk. Have it standing near Charminar.

Vegetarian

Nihari and paya

Mutton stew cooked overnight (nihari) and spicy goat trotter stew (paya), mopped up with naan. This is an Old City breakfast, so go early.

Qubani ka meetha

Stewed apricots served warm, usually with custard or ice cream. Order it to finish a biryani lunch.

Getting there

Fly in: Rajiv Gandhi airport (HYD) is about 22 km from the centre by one guide, roughly 2 hours 15 minutes from Delhi and 1 hour 30 from Mumbai. By rail, the Shatabdi from Pune takes about 8 hours 15 minutes, not Tuesdays, by a third-party listing. Check which of the three main stations you're using.

Where to stay

Banjara Hills and Somajiguda Mid-range hotels for most first-timers. You'll need a cab into the Old City.

Sources differ on this, or we have only one, so check locally.

Nampally, Abids and Koti Budget hotels near Nampally station, the cheapest base for trains. Don't expect much polish.

Worth knowing

Opening

Keep Friday out of your Old City plan. Chowmahalla Palace and the Salar Jung Museum both close on Fridays, and some guides say Charminar does too.

Rules

Don't count on entering Mecca Masjid's prayer hall. Sources disagree on non-Muslims and women, and we found no official rule. Dress modestly, remove your shoes and follow staff.

Safety

See the Old City by day and dress conservatively. One guide advises against late-night visits, especially for women, and warns of chain snatching in crowds.
