Is this for you?

Kutch has the White Rann, a vast white salt desert, plus craft villages and an ancient city site. It's also the hardest place in this region to organise. Foreign visitors need extra permit steps for the Rann, and the season runs only from November to February. Without your own car you'll need a hired driver or a tour. If you hate paperwork and planning, skip it.

What to do

Bhuj old town

Bhuj is your base. One guide lists Aaina Mahal and Prag Mahal (two palaces), the Kutch Museum, Hamirsar Lake and the Smritivan memorial.

Sources differ on this, or we have only one, so check locally.

Bhujodi craft village

Stop here on your way out of Bhuj. One guide says Bhujodi is the village for crafts, and it makes an easy first stop.

The White Rann at Dhordo

A vast white salt plain, based from Dhordo, 80 to 85 km from Bhuj. Rann Utsav runs 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, though one guide says 28 February. Foreigners need extra permit steps, so read the notices first.

Busy dates and dark skies

One guide says to book early for Diwali week, Christmas, New Year and full-moon windows, the busiest times. The sky is darkest around the new moon, best for stars. It's cold after sunset.

Mandvi beach and shipbuilding

One guide says Mandvi has a beach and a shipbuilding tradition, which is enough for a day.

Dholavira, a 4,000-year-old city

One source only: a long, optional trip to a 4,000-year-old city on Khadir Bet island, in Kachchh Desert Wildlife Sanctuary. Nearest airport Bhuj, nearest station Bhachau. Check foreigner rules with your operator.

Kala Dungar, check first

Check first. This 462 m hill is under army control, no photos, and our one source can't say the White Rann permit covers it. Never go beyond India Bridge, where entry needs BSF (Border Security Force) permission.

What to eat

Kutch cooks with millet and a lot of garlic, and it gave India the dabeli. Bhuj is where you'll eat best, and like all of Gujarat, Kutch is dry.

Dabeli

A soft bun with spiced potato, peanuts and pomegranate, invented in Mandvi. Eat one wherever you see a queue.

Vegetarian

Gulab pak

A traditional sweet of milk, dry fruit and rose. Have a small piece after a meal.

Vegetarian

Kutchi thali

A plate of kadhi, bajra roti (millet bread), vegetables and kachori, the fried pastry. Have it at lunch in Bhuj.

Vegetarian

Odho

Smoky mashed aubergine with garlic chutney, kadhi (yoghurt curry) and bajra rotla, millet flatbread.

Vegetarian

Pakwan

A crisp fried snack of flour and ajwain, a thyme-like seed. Buy a packet for the long drives.

Getting there

Fly to Bhuj (BHJ) or take the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail (a new fast regional train) from Ahmedabad, about 5h35 to 5h45. It arrives around 23:15 and the return leaves around 05:00, so plan your hotel. Dhordo, the White Rann base, is 80 to 85 km from Bhuj, 1.5 to 2 hours by car. Avoid driving the Banni road at night.

Where to stay

Bhuj walled city One guide says this is a good base for Bhuj and the craft villages, with budget and mid-range stays in the old walled town. The White Rann is still 80 to 85 km away.

Dhordo Tent City and resorts Tent City is the splurge if you want to sleep at the White Rann. Prices aren't verified, and guests reportedly get permits through their booking, but not specifically foreigners.

Worth knowing

Rules

These penalties come from the text of the Gujarat Prohibition Act as published on a legal database. For drinking without a permit, a first offence carries up to six months in prison and/or a fine of up to 1,000 rupees, with a minimum of three months and 500 rupees unless the court records special reasons. A second or later offence carries six months to two years and a fine of up to 2,000 rupees. For buying, possessing or transporting liquor without a permit, the Act as amended in 2017 allows up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to 5 lakh rupees (500,000), with a first-offence minimum of two years and 1 lakh rupees (100,000) unless special reasons are recorded. Causing a nuisance while drunk in a public place carries one to three years plus a fine. Police have raided private venues too: in July 2025 they arrested 39 people at a resort near Sanand for allegedly drinking. We found no case involving a foreign tourist. This wording is from one legal database and has not been checked against an official copy.

Permit

Commercial guides, not foreigner-specific, put the counter at Bhirandiyara checkpost, about 55 km from Bhuj, open 10:00 or 11:00 to 17:30. Show photo ID; a permit covers one date and entry window.

Permit

Never go beyond India Bridge at Kala Dungar: entry needs BSF (Border Security Force) permission. One source says it's an army area with no photos, so check if your permit covers foreigners there.

Sources differ on this, or we have only one, so check locally.

Permit

Ask your Tent City operator or call 02832 251007 or 02832 230832 what a foreign passport needs, as the official portal is Indian-only (provisional). Carry original passport, visa and photocopies.

Rules

Gujarat is a dry state: alcohol is banned. Section 46A of the Gujarat Prohibition Act, 1949 lets an authorised officer grant a tourist's permit to a non-citizen who is visiting temporarily, to consume, use and buy foreign liquor, and the permit can never be granted for more than one month. Without a permit, drinking or holding alcohol is a criminal offence and can mean prison. If you want a drink, get the permit first, buy only from licensed outlets (the state publishes a list, mostly hotels and resorts in cities such as Ahmedabad), and drink only in private, never in public. Do not expect bars. Never buy bootleg liquor. We could not confirm which online permit portal works today, so ask your hotel about the permit when you book and allow extra time on arrival.

Safety

Don't drive the Banni road to Dhordo at night, because guides discourage it. It's 80 to 85 km from Bhuj, 1.5 to 2 hours by car, so leave in daylight.

Safety

Stay at the official White Rann viewpoint and don't walk or drive on across the flat. The UK and Canada advise against all travel within 10 km of the Pakistan border, which is unmarked in places.

Rules

Don't touch alcohol without a tourist's permit, valid at most one month, in Bhuj or the White Rann: it's a criminal offence. Use licensed outlets, drink in private, and never buy bootleg liquor.

Rules

The only report we found of how a foreign visitor actually got the permit is from March 2016. The traveller needed a passport, a visa or entry stamp and a hotel document proving a Gujarat stay. One hotel refused despite an online permit, and an in-person application at a licensed hotel liquor shop in Ahmedabad worked. That is old, so ask your hotel before you arrive. The state's Prohibition and Excise Department is at Nashabandi Bhavan, Sector 10B, Gandhinagar (email pne-gnr@gujarat.gov.in).

Permit

As far as we know, you need no Rann permit for Bhuj, Bhujodi or Mandvi, only for the White Rann. That's our reading, not an official statement.

Safety

By our rough map estimates, not legal figures, the White Rann viewpoint is about 44 km from the Pakistan border, Dhordo Tent City about 47 km, Dholavira about 37 km. All are outside the 10 km line.

Permit

Check with your operator before Dholavira. No official page says foreigners need a permit or that they don't, and one report says tent city guests there need one.

Opening

Book early for Diwali week, Christmas, New Year and full-moon windows. Rann Utsav at Dhordo runs 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027 (one guide says 28 February), and it's cold after sunset.
