Is this for you?

Orchha is small and slow: a palace-fort, working temples and river views, with fewer crowds than Agra or Khajuraho. It suits couples, families and anyone solo. The nearest station is Jhansi, about 16 km away. If you want a big city's energy, skip it.

What to do

Palace-fort complex

The Raj Mahal, Jahangir Mahal and Sheesh Mahal (mahal means palace) make up the complex. The fort is open about 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Chaturbhuj and Laxmi Narayan temples

Two of Orchha's main temples, both close to the fort. We have this from one source.

Sources differ on this, or we have only one, so check locally.

Ram Raja Temple

Orchha's best-known working temple, free to enter. Opening hours and prayer times differ between sources, so check locally.

Chhatris on the Betwa

A chhatri is a domed memorial pavilion, and one source counts 14 along the Betwa river. Sunset is the time to be there.

What to eat

Orchha is a small temple town and most food sits around Ram Raja Temple, with plenty of vegetarian places. Liquor sales have been banned here since April 2025, so don't count on a beer with dinner.

Bhutte ka kees

Grated corn cooked with milk and spices. Look for it on menus that list regional Bundelkhand dishes.

Vegetarian

Mawa bati

A rich milk-solid dumpling in sugar syrup, a sweet from this part of central India.

Vegetarian

Murg Bundelkhand

A local-style chicken curry, on the hotel menu at Bundelkhand Riverside. Ask what's on the day you go.

Getting there

From Delhi or Agra, take the 22470 Vande Bharat (not Mondays) to Jhansi (10:30), then taxi about 16 km (one source says 10), roughly 30 minutes (45 by auto). The 12049 Gatimaan leaves Jhansi around 15:00 for Agra and Delhi (not Fridays). To Khajuraho, board it at 10:35, in at 14:20. Buses thin out after 9 pm. Gwalior airport (GWL): about 120 km.

Where to stay

Betwa riverside The scenic top end, with heritage riverside hotels. Sheesh Mahal, a stay inside the fort, has only about eight rooms, so don't depend on it.

By the fort and Ram Raja Temple The walkable centre, basic to mid-range. The catch is some temple noise.
