Is this for you?

A compact Odisha triangle of beach, stone temples and a lake. Know this first: Jagannath in Puri and Lingaraj in Bhubaneswar, the two famous Hindu temples, don't admit non-Hindus, whatever your nationality. The Sun Temple at Konark and several Bhubaneswar temples are open to everyone, so the trip still works. It suits families and anyone after a slow week near the sea. If getting inside those two temples is why you'd come and you're not Hindu, skip it.

What to do

Jagannath Temple from outside

Only Hindus may enter, says the temple's FAQ, and that includes foreign visitors. See the area around it. Odisha Tourism has sent non-Hindus to the Raghunandan Library roof across the street, but ask if it's open now.

Puri beach at Swargadwar

Swargadwar is where most people walk and eat. The surf can be rough, so stay out of the water unless a lifeguard is on duty, and don't walk the beach alone after dark.

Konark Sun Temple

A giant stone chariot of a temple, UNESCO-listed since 1984; listed hours differ, so arrive from about 6 AM. The Nata Mandap dance hall has been barred to visitors since November 2025. Light and sound show 7:30 to 8:20 PM March to November, 6:30 to 7:20 PM December to February; check ticket and show times locally.

Chilika Lake at Satapada

A day trip to Chilika, a large lake, from Satapada. One source says dolphins are sometimes sighted.

Sources differ on this, or we have only one, so check locally.

Old temples in Bhubaneswar

Many small old temples. Lingaraj, the biggest, doesn't admit non-Hindus, but there's a viewing platform outside, where you can politely decline donation pressure. See Muktesvara and Rajarani up close.

Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves

Rock-cut caves on two hills at the edge of Bhubaneswar. Foreigner prices and hours differ between sources, so check at the entrance.

Sources differ on this, or we have only one, so check locally.

What to eat

Odia food is gentle, with lentils, mustard and very good sweets, and on this coast the fish is fresh. Puri's great temple food, mahaprasad, is sold inside the temple where non-Hindus can't go, so don't plan around it.

Chhena poda

Fresh cheese baked until the sugar browns. Buy it from a sweet shop, still warm if you can.

Vegetarian

Chingudi jhola

A light prawn curry eaten with rice. Have it along the Puri seafront.

Dalma

Lentils cooked with vegetables and a little spice, Odisha's comfort dish. Have it with rice at lunch.

Vegetarian

Machha besara

Pakhala

Rice soaked in water, eaten cool with fried sides. Odisha's summer lunch, and restaurants serve it as a thali, a set plate.

3 more to know
Safety

Lifeguards cover only part of the beach, so stay out unless one's on duty, and avoid it after dark, especially alone. The sea is rough, drownings are often reported, and storms bring bathing bans.

Opening

Don't plan on entering the Nata Mandap at Konark. Visitors have been barred since November 2025, so you can't climb it or touch its carvings.

Opening

Check before you book: the Howrah to Puri Vande Bharat trains 22895 and 22896 are listed as not running on Thursdays. Those are timetable listings, not IRCTC.
