Tiger safari zones
The park has 10 zones: most tigers are seen in 1 to 5, fewer in 6, and little wildlife in 8 (Balas). The booking system assigns your zone, so you can't choose one or be promised a tiger.
You come here for tigers, and no one can promise you one. Safaris start at dawn in open vehicles, and the main zones shut in the monsoon months. It suits couples and families who don't mind early mornings. If a drive with no tiger would ruin your day, skip it.

October timings are about 06:30 to 10:00 and 14:30 to 18:00, and they shift with the season. Our only source isn't a government site, so confirm them on the booking portal.

Book two safaris to improve your odds, since sightings are never guaranteed. One source says there's no lodging inside the park, so you stay in Sawai Madhopur.

You'll eat most of your meals at your hotel, and that's normal for a safari stay. For something local, go to the small places in Sawai Madhopur town or along Ranthambhore Road, and order Rajasthani.
Baked wheat balls with lentils and sweet crushed wheat, Rajasthan's signature plate. Order it for a late lunch after a morning drive.
Vegetarian
Gram flour dumplings in yogurt curry, a Rajasthani vegetarian staple. Look for it at dhabas, the roadside eateries, in town.

Fiery red mutton curry, on hotel menus around the park. Ask how hot your kitchen makes it.

Stay in Sawai Madhopur, the railway town about 14 km from the park. From Jaipur it's about 2 to 2h45 by train (131 km), or 3 to 3.5 hours by road (about 167 to 191 km depending on the source). Jaipur airport is the nearest we suggest, though the official page doesn't name one. Book safaris only on the government portal, covered in the notices.
Sawai Madhopur One source has stays here running from budget to luxury lodges, about 14 km from the park. There's no lodging inside the park.

Book only on the Rajasthan Forest Department's Aaranyak portal (aaranyak.forest.rajasthan.gov.in). One source warns agent sites charge more; foreigners need a passport, and you can't choose a zone.

Check before a monsoon visit. Rajasthan Tourism says open October to June, but for 1 July to 30 September two sources say only zones 6 to 10 run, a guide says closed, and there's no official order.

Plan no Wednesday safari, and check your date on the booking portal. A 2023 order reported all four Rajasthan tiger reserves shut every Wednesday from 1 July 2023; we can't confirm it holds in 2026.
