Is this for you?

A calm university town about two hours by train from Kolkata, where the poet Rabindranath Tagore founded a school with open-air classes. Expect red-earth lanes, small museums and village crafts. It makes a good quiet break between Kolkata and the hills. There's very little nightlife, so skip it if you want evenings out.

What to do

Uttarayan and Rabindra Bhavana

Uttarayan is the group of houses where Tagore lived, and Rabindra Bhavana is a museum of his life and work. Both have closed only on Thursdays since 2 July 2025, so ignore older guides saying Wednesday.

World Heritage town

Santiniketan joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023. Come for the open-air teaching spaces and campus buildings, because there's no one big monument.

Surul Rajbari

A rajbari is a mansion built by a landowning family. One source lists Surul Rajbari near town, and it makes a good afternoon stop.

Sources differ on this, or we have only one, so check locally.

Ballavpur Deer Park

A small deer park on the edge of town. One guide lists it as closed on Wednesdays, so go another day.

Sonajhuri and the Kopai river

A gentle walk through Sonajhuri forest and along the Kopai river. One source calls it the usual way to spend a last morning.

Poush Mela

A mela is a fair, and this winter one has crafts, music and food in the last week of December, the Bengali month of Poush. It ran 23 to 28 December in 2024 and 2025; no 2026 dates by 31 October 2026. Rooms fill up.

What to eat

Food here is quiet Bengali home cooking, with poppy seed, river fish and bitter vegetables. It's a nice part of a stay, not a reason to come, and choices are few.

Aloo posto

Potatoes in a paste of poppy seeds, a dish this part of Bengal is especially fond of. Have it with rice at lunch.

Vegetarian

Katla jhol

A light curry of katla, a river fish, eaten with rice. A simple lunch near Sonajhuri.

Mochar ghonto

Banana flower cooked dry with coconut and Bengali five-spice. Look for it on a vegetarian thali, a set plate.

Vegetarian

Shukto

A mildly bitter-sweet mixed vegetable curry, eaten as the first course of a Bengali meal.

Getting there

Take the Santiniketan Express 12337 from Howrah at 10:00, reaching Bolpur Shantiniketan at 12:15, every day. The 12338 returns at 13:15, reaching Howrah at 16:00. Those times mean you should stay at least one night. Check the timetable when you book. The station is about 3 km from town, so you'll need a local ride.
