Is this for you?

Bijapur, now officially Vijayapura, was the seat of the Adil Shahi sultans, Muslim kings of the Deccan, and their tombs and mosques are the only reason to come. Two days is plenty. Hotels are simple and flights haven't started, so you come by train. Skip it unless you care about architecture or Deccan history, and skip it from March to June, when highs pass 39°C. It pairs well with Hampi, about 6 hours by train.

What to do

Gol Gumbaz

Mohammed Adil Shah's tomb, a sultan's mausoleum under a dome about 210 feet high. Whispers in its gallery carry and echo. Sources give 10:00 am to 5:00 pm or 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, so check at the gate.

Sources differ on this, or we have only one, so check locally.

Ibrahim Rauza

The tomb of Ibrahim Adil Shah II and his queen, facing a mosque across ponds and fountains. Open 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Foreigner fees are quoted from ₹100 to ₹600, so ask first.

Jumma Masjid

The old city's great mosque, and entry is free. Karnataka Tourism asks you to dress modestly at mosques and tombs. Keep clear of prayer times.

Malik-e-Maidan

Karnataka Tourism calls this the world's largest medieval cannon. It's a quick stop, and a fun one.

Citadel and old palaces

A guide suggests pairing the big tombs with the citadel and the Mithari and Asar Mahals. We couldn't confirm access, so treat it as a walk around.

What to eat

You come for the domes and eat what the region eats: North Karnataka meals built on jowar, or sorghum, flatbread. Ask for a khanavali, a plain local meals restaurant. We could confirm very few places by name, so ask your hotel which is good right now.

Chutney pudi

Dry chutney powder of peanut, sesame or garlic, mixed with ghee or curd. A spoonful with your rotti does a lot of the work.

Vegetarian

Jolada rotti

Thin flatbread of jowar, or sorghum, the staple of North Karnataka. Eat it fresh and warm at lunch, with whatever vegetables the meal brings.

Vegetarian

Mirchi bajji and khara mandakki

Fried chilli fritters with spiced puffed rice, the market snack of the region. Good for a late afternoon after the tombs. Choose a stall frying fresh.

Vegetarian

Shenga holige

Sweet flatbread filled with peanut and jaggery, a dark unrefined sugar. It usually comes at the end of a meal.

Vegetarian

Yennegai

Small aubergines stuffed with spicy masala, the side dish that belongs with jolada rotti. If it's on the menu, order it.
